Self-Determination Theory

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a well-established framework for understanding human motivation, wellbeing, and development. Developed by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, the theory explains why people are more motivated, engaged, and resilient in some environments than others.

At its core, Self-Determination Theory suggests that people thrive when three basic psychological needs are supported:

Autonomy – feeling a sense of choice, ownership, and agency
Competence – feeling capable, challenged, and able to improve
Relatedness – feeling connected, valued, and supported by others

When these needs are met, individuals are more likely to enjoy what they are doing, persst through difficulty, learn from setbacks, and develop confidence that transfers beyond the immediate context.

In youth sport, Self-Determination Theory helps us understand how coaching styles, parental support, and team environments can either nurture or unintentionally undermine motivation and wellbeing. Supporting self-determination is not about removing challenge or structure — it is about creating environments where young people feel supported to grow, think for themselves, and take ownership of their experiences

Order of PRO Series Lectures and Panel Q&A

By the end of this course, we hope you are able to:
  • Understand the types of support that are most likely to lead to self-determined young people
  • Reflect on the type of support that 'good intentions' can lead us too
  • Know which skills we need to help empower young people
